welcome back. it is 6:00 here this morning. we are watching hurricane sandy very closely for you this morning. good morning. i'm sarah simmons. >> i'm wisdom martin. a very busy morning indeed. tucker barnes will have the latest information as soon as we get it. >> before we talk with him, first the warnings about this storm are being taken very seriously. >> there is a long list of what is closed today. metro is closed today. that includes all rail, bus and metro access service.

the federal government is also closed. d.c. government offices or closed as well and so are most schools across it is region. >> for a full list of closures gorks to myfoxdc.com. we are also running all the closures on the top of your screen. -- for a full list of closures, go to myfoxdc.com. >> tucker, can you at least -- i know you are very busy over there. here, we have a picture it was right now. what is the latest on this? >> so, we're now looking it at the outer band of sandy actually working their way inland and starting to approach our area. see that banding taking place. see the yellows and reds pushing as contract bay. that is one of the outer bands. you see the banding features and sure enough, they are going to bring very heavy rain. so overnight, we've had a light steady rain across the area. we'll see the rain intensity really pick up here in the near term as that rain starts to push to the west of the bay.

let's go our hd radar. let me show you the bigger picture he or the small are picture and give you some local radar and look at the rain now to the east of washington into prince george's county, out 50. crofton, bowie, annapolis, down into southern maryland, calvert county getting some very heavy rain and this will continue to spread across the area. so north and west, leesburg, out towards front royal and frederick, you too will see this heavy rain as that whole surge, that whole big storm we've been talking about for days and days continues to push unfortunately right in our direction. it looks like it will past just to our north and east during the overnight hours. here is the latest with sandy. maximum winds have increased since you went to bed last night. now, 58 miles per hour. that is a big change and that pressure continues to fall. 946millibars. this storm is very intense for this late in the season and for its current latitude. this is -- we're in new grounds here as far as the track and as far as intensity. moving right off to the north

at 15. that is the other big change. during the day yesterday, it was pushing off to the north and east and now we're starting to see that recurvature. our computer model has suggested this will curve to the north and west and eventually the west. and sure enough, we are now starting to see that turn as it starts to get drawn back to the coastal areas. so all systems go unfortunately for lapped fall. i think landfall will be sometime this evening. thinking a little further south than we were thinking yesterday. maybe the bay of delaware. it will be awfully close to delaware. a lot of the thicks i'm concerned about is a lot of the computer models are trying to steak what is left over with sandy and loop it back into the d.c. area. that would only exacerbate the rain problems around here later tonight and during the day tomorrow. this will be at least a two-day event and we'll be deeping with clean-up by wednesday and thursday. we're just getting started here and, of course, conditions will continue to deteriorate a little later. our entire area under a high wind warning. this goes into effect at 8:00 this morning. winds will gust later today and

the wind will be increasing in intensity during the day. they will be approaching 70 miles per hour by tonight. so that is very close to hurricane-force winds. of course, our trees are not built to handle 70-mile per hour winds. woman have a lot of issues. 29 in annapolis. there was a wind gust earlier close to 40 in ocean city. they're a few hours ahead of us in terms of the storm. let me mention again, the rainfall will be heavy enough that we'll have some flooding issues as well. five to 10 inches of rain. >> and did you even mention the snow yet? >> not this go-round. >> that is for the next time. >> couldn't even get this one in. >> a blizzard warning out to the west as well. >> we've got a lot to get to. we had a stalled car 95 and 212- 6789 that has been moved out of

the way. typically, roads such as beach drive tend to flood easily so we've already got them blocked off right now in preparation for flooding and storm damage. little falls parkway the same between massachusetts avenue and river road. that is already blocked off in case of storm damage and sligo creek parkway between rain wave and piney branch. metro, no service until further notice. amtrak, the northeast corridor service is suspended. winds restricts already in effect for those traveling out towards the bay bridge which means empty box trailers, trail are themselves that are not full of anything cannot cross over the bridge. they are prohibited. there is also a portion of route other that remains blocked off as you travel between golf course road and philadelphia road. as of right now, route 90 remains open. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. areas along the delmarva coast are already seeing some dangerous conditions with high winds and flooding. >> let's go out to the eastern show now where the surf has really been kicking up for

hours. fox 5's lauren demarco is live in ocean city this morning with the latest. it sound like it is a little windier than when we last checked in. >> reporter: definitely. the wind continues to increase. it looks like the rain once again picking up i guess as those bands make their way through the area. we have seen waves crashing over the seawall. we saw one wave crash over across the boardwalk and into this outdoor pool at our hotel. so definitely seeing that and some folks who live here had said the one police officer told us that he hadn't seen waves like that crashing over the seawall in his 23 years. we know it hasn't seen a major breach since its construction after the hurricane gloria in 1985. now, officers do continue to patrol the boardwalk. we've got sustained winds about 29 miles per hour. if that reaches 50 miles per hour, they will not be patrolling any longer looking out to make sure that no one is

out here in this storm. but there were about 200 people who decided not to go with the mandatory evacuations and who did stay down here south of 17th street in ocean city. so those people still in their homes, hopefully hunkered down because it does appear to be getting worse for the long haul. >> you can already hear it is starting to cut out just a little bit hearing the audio from lauren there. so, of course, as the storm gets more and more intense there, it will be an issue for our live shots. areas closer here to d.c. along the chesapeake are also feeling the effects of sandy. >> later on this hour, we'll go live to annapolis identify look at the scene there this morning -- for a look at the scene there this morning. >> first, a look at how the storm is affecting new york city where there is major

welcome back to fox 5 morning news. we continue to track hurricane sandy in new york where all train, subway and bus service has been shut down because of the risk of flooding. schools in the big apple are all closed. the big earth concern is the tidal surge which could reach up to 11 feet in parts of manhattan. maybe bloomberg ordered nearly 400,000 people to evacuate low- lying areas. >> our team coverage of hurricane sandy and the superstorm continues this morning tucker barnes and gwen talbert have the latest on the storm's track as we go to break. important information if you plan to fly today. air lanes serving reagan national and dulles international have canceled most flights for today. bwi is reporting very limited

operations. passengers are being urged to check their flight status with their airline before you head out the door. we are coming back in just a moment. anncr: which do you believe?

welcome back. you can see we've goa live look for you at two locations. we've been checking in with areas throughout maryland and virginia. ocean city on the right side of your screen. you can see the rain coming down there. on the left, we haven't checked in with rehoboth beach yet. the raining rately coming down there. >> is it worse now in ocean city? >> no. same deal. they are on the coastal areas. they will get in on the same

action. the worst yet to come. the real key here is the high tide. lauren has been reporting the seawall being breached already and we are still about two hours away from high tide. we are going to keep our fingers crossed that the wall holds. there could somebody real issues down there during the course of the day. they are just getting started now as well. wind are gusting to 49 at ocean city. winds will be gusting to hurricane force. >> they've already,ed these mandatory and nonmandatory evacuations telling people to get out but people still say they have the right to stay. so if they're trapped in it, it could be some issues as well declared a state of energy in both places. >> those of what you that have been to ocean steerk inlet there in ocean city,s that was caused by an a hurricane in

1933. -- those of you that have been to ocean city inlet, there in ocean city, that was caused by a hurricane in 1933. this is one of the outer bands associated with hurricane sandy working south to north there. it is just kind of pin wheeling back toward the washington area and back out to the west. parts of the area, manassas, leesburg, frederick, you haven't seen a whole lot yet. will shortly and once the rain arrives, it will be with us for the entire day. the rain rates here are going to pick up during the course of the day as the storm gets closer. we're just starting to see the rain. that will be stage one. then we'll be dealing with the winds. let me show you the big picture on sandy. when we went to bed last night. this was a weak category one hurricane. it has picked up in intensity overnight. you see the eye. you had an eye develop during the evening hours. this storm has winds of 85

miles per hour. 941millibars. that would make this a historic hurricane. when and as it gets injected with the cooler air, this hybrid storm will take off and give is heavy rain rates and dangerous winds. we are still thinking landfall just to our north and east, perhaps the bay of delaware, perhaps southern new jersey. that has shifted slightly more south. what i want to feature here is that the computer models are suggesting that the storm will track across northern and central maryland. this would be a worse case scenario. we would have the center of circulation literally overhead for several hours as it continues to spin and rain itself out before being pushed to the north. overnight tonight and into the day tomorrow, we'll be dealing

with some very dangerous winds around here. in fact, i think the winds -- the wind field will be hurricane force for a time. the northern part of the chesapeake bay, north central maryland, you are likely to encounter hurricane-force winds here. that would be 70, 75, 08-mile per hour winds as we get into the overnight hours. here is your wind field. i want to mention, this is an enormous wind field. it spreads about 500 miles all the way from the carolinas to maine this morning. we are talking about tropical storm winds. winds of greater than 40 miles per hour. by 2:00 p.m. today, ocean city, rehoboth getting in on the wort of it as the wind start to pick up. they will be 06 plus. watch what happens as we get into 6:00 tonight. the storm approaching the coast. it as it moves inland, 10:00 tonight, our wind are raging across the washington area. you want to time out the wind for us later this afternoon. they pick up in intensity as we get into the nighttime hours. they will be approaching hurricane force. the latest run suggesting we

may have hurricane force wind here in washington by about 1:00 a.m. that will cause a great deal of problems around here. lot of power outages, tree failures, that kind of thing. tomorrow night, things will lose the up tense at this and we'll gradually get better. here are your wind gusts projected. 38 by noon. 57 by 5:00. overnight tonight by 11:00, midnight, we'll be in the mid- 60s, perhaps 70s. dangerous wind expected later this an and tonight as the storm moves inland just to our north and east. 54 today. rain heavy at time. becoming windy. you're reading it right. i want to mention one other if he thank you. the temperatures tonight will be very cold. if you lose power, make sure now you've got blankets that you are ready to keep yourself warm. you won't be able to heat your house without electricity. it will be very chilly for the next couple of days.

metro spokesperson dan stessel. >> good morning. >> our metrobus, metro transit and metro access is canceled for the entire day today. this decision was made yesterday following a briefing by the national weather service that included some new information in term of what to expect in terms of sustained winds. we also got feedback from the commercial power companies about their ability to maintain power for the metrorail system. we get our power from dominion and from pepco just like everybody else and this were expressing some concern about the possibility of widespread power outages. so the combination of those factors led us to the decision to preemptively suspend all service on metro for monday just like virtually every transit agency up and down the east coast from here in the washington area up tonight aincluding new york. >> now, dan, you mentioned power outages. and as we know, that is

something that can go on around here for days. and i know that probably answers the question but it needs to be asked of how long we could possibly be without metro service contingent on the power. >> we do have a good relationship with the power companies. we expect we'll be able to restore service in the coming days perhaps before every neighborhood is back online. we will be a priority for those power companies once the storm passes through. but there is the possibility of those power problems and we want to smoke make sure we don't put customers or employees in a situation during the storm that could be hazardous. >> thank you for giving us an update. good luck. >> thank you so much. >> once the storm hits full force, shelters could become a

standing watter in lots of different areas. we'll go now to gwen tolbart who has some of the latest information on hurricane sandy. >> good morning. this is a huge, huge very dangerous storm here. let's have a look at our inpractice red satellite shot and show you what is happening. occasionally, you can notice a little bit of an eye here, just a slight indication of t so this does bear watching. but this entire is huge. you can see just how far it is all spreading and right now even up to areas of southern new england, they are already starting to feel the effects of this storm system. so let's talk a little bit about the winds and the storm surge and show you exactly what is happening there with it. let me get this clicker to work a little bit and there we go. here is a look at the rainfall. here is what we are anticipating may possibly anticipate. from d.c. to the inorganic and south here, we are talking -- to the north and south here, we

are talking 8 to 10 inches. there is a chance that there be isolated areas at 12 inches. to the far west, we could see some snowfall there. here is what we're talking about in terms of rainfall for us. this could change and those numbers could even get higher. this is a general indication. so as we take a look at futurecast, we are seeing a few light showers starting to move in some areas right now. here is a look at what we're anticipating by the 4:00 hour. it will be heavy rainfall at that point. when we speak about the rainfall with this system, we are talking heavier and steadier rainfall as things start to slide downhill. some torrential rainfall is all. these pockets here where you see the red and the orange, those are even heavier than what we see in the yellow and a lot more than what we're seeing in the green. so here is is a look at 6:00 a.m. by tuesday, still in the thick of things. the color air starts to wrap in a little bit.

futurecast is trying to push a little bit more of that precipitation a little bit more to the east. wind gusts right now from 17 to 29 miles per hour. 37 at quantico. here is a look at a time line on those wind gusts. by tuesday at noon, talking 64- mile per hour wind gusts. that gives you a pretty good indication of strength of this storm system. we are talking 4 4 to 8 feet for the storm surge. let's check in now with julie wright for traffic. >> we are dealing with a lot of slow traffic now for those continuing along southbound i- 95 where we just now realized we have accident activity tying up thest left side of the high. we have a portion of beach drive closed off between knowles avenue and 410678 this is in preparation for storm damage. this is typically an area where we see the floods occur and we are anticipating a number of tree debris that we have to

clean up as well. little falls parkway, the same scenario between massachusetts avenue and river road anticipating that will be shut down until further notice because of tree debris and water when this happens. metrorail, no service today because of the storm. that is the same for amtrak appear northeast corridor between boston and d.c. no service available there. montgomery county ride-on buses are closed off. metrobus, metro access, as you can imagine, service suspended because of this storm. around town, you will find wind restricts posted not only for the key bridge in baltimore but all here at the bay bridge for those traveling between annapolis and kent island. still, the portion of the route headed into ocean city remains closed. that is route 50 between golf course and philadelphia road. route 90 reminutes open at this time. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. we are following the path of hurricane this morning. the storm surge in the chesapeake is a serious concern. >> that's right. some parts of annapolis are already feeling the impact.

holly morris is there with more on the rising waters. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. wind is picking up a little bit. the rain is coming down be obviously steady. drops are really big but right now, it seems like another stormy morning here in annapolis. obviously, we know the worst is still to come. the thing of a noticed most, usually when we're down here doing live shots, people are jogging by, lots of people are out. the day is starting. it is kind of an eerie calm here this morning. not a lot of people out. i think people listened to the warnings over the weekend. they did what they need to do to be prepared and now they're waiting for sandy to come in. i did see one guy up on the wall looking at the water. i said hey, what are you doing, come on over here. >> what were you doing? >> i was looking at the seawall, a few little cracks here. not my job. i just kind of pay attention

though these things. i've had an architectural jeering firm for 25 years so i just watch this. and this will flood over before the high tide this evening i imagine. >> reporter: you said you were checking out some of your friends' boats. what were you looking for? >> just adjusting lines. when isabelle came through in 2003, that what saved my boats with a handful of 16-penny nails and a 43-foot boat, just driving them in over the ropes, line that go down into the water and disappear with the piles. i just stayed on board and adjusted lines all night. >> reporter: so you've been in this situation before. you've been waiting for the storm to come in. what are your thoughts on this one. what are you feeling this morning? >> i'm thinking that, as long as the northwesterly storm pushes water out off the western shore, i think that will help mitigate some of the storm surge that we would expect. but the eastern shore over around kent i onland and all along the coast there, i think

they are aa going to get swamped. inwe'll still have a very high tide with a full moon at 3:50:00 p.m. and the high tide around 6:15. and the latitude of sandy somewhere in between. inwe'll get a soup are high tide. but as long as the northwesterly keeps pushing it out from the west going east, then i think the eastern shore is going to get it a lot worse. >> reporter: you are cautiously optimist faulk this area in particular. >> i am. but folk on the eastern shore. my studios are over near isn't michael's in a low high pressure lying area and probably be going over there in my hip boots. it is anyone's guess right now but it really kind of depends, i think, and i'm nate weather person, but having sailed a lot and watching it come in from both sides, it will be interesting to see which overpowers what or if it just

keeps turning. since it is going count are clockwise, i believe, we -- counterclockwise, i believe, i think we could have some extraordinary tides. >> russell is the first one that came over this morning and said you guys need coffee? we said yes. we'll ride the storm out together. you keep bringing the coffee sir and i'll get you the latest infor from our weather people. >> you got a deal. >> that is the latest here from annapolis. we'll continue to check in throughout the morning. >> some local assistance on many forms on the forecast and coffee. you got it pretty good over there so to speak. thank you so much. u so much. the hurricane forcing the presidential candidates to alter their plans. president is in florida this morning and atending an event in ohio before heading back to

the white house to monitor the hurricane. >> his republican challenger called after campaign events in virginia yesterday and will not appear in new hampshire tomorrow. today, he campaigns in ohio and wisconsin. in d.c., the board of elections suspended early voting today and con to monitor hurricane sandy. the board will make a decision on reopening polling places later on today. over the weekend, there were long loins at polling places in both d.c. and in maryland. >> of course , the storm could have lasting effects into next week. we'll be currented about that as well. we are get something nap shots -- we'll be concerned about that as well. >> they are getting some snapshots of the weather. >> it shows a police car trapped in flood waters along

try the simply delicious latte everyone can enjoy. america runs on dunkin'! keeping an eye on hurricane sandy right now as our area prepares for the storm's rival. conditions in ocean city, maryland continue to worsen this morning. high winds and heavy rains are causing roads to flood. route 50 bridge and 17th street south are closed this morning. police have issued a mandatory evacuation for the area. the biggest worry there is of a storm surge from the bay and other low-lying areas this morning. morning. i want to lighten thans up right now for just a moment and talk about sports. talk the morning line, game four of the world series with the giants looking to finish the sweep of the tigers.

we pick it up in the tenth inning tied at three. a single home to tie -- the tie- breaking run off of the fl koch to give san francisco the lead. then reliever sergio romo came in and closed out detroit. the giants win-3 to sweep the tigers in four straight. this is the second world series in the last three years. to football now. the redskins headed north to pittsburgh. pittsburgh won this one. normally, dave ross is filling us in on the sports news of the day but today,ettes he's actually helping us with the hurricane coverage. >> what he has to share can help you over the next few

know what is going o we'll try to be as interactive as we can with social media. that is what we do here. back up to wisdom and sarah. >> tucker barnes and gwen tolbart are tag teaming a little bit on the storm this morning. and so you are taking over for the time being. tell us what the latest is right now we need to know. >> as tucker mentioned last hour with the latest update that came out, this storm has intensified. it has strengthened. that is not great news for us because one thing about it, even if it hadn't intensified, regardless of whether it is a category one hurricane or a tropical storm, damage and the impact is going to be massive on this thing. so because it is such a huge storm and we do anticipate it being even worse in term of what is happening with it, then hurricane irene was because of

the storm. here, can you easily see we've already got some light rainfall. rainfall. this will increase and spread and get heavier and steadier once we move into the course of the day as the system gets closer to us. just be very prepared. flooding issues everywhere as well as strong winds. what we'll begin with is a look at the spaghetti model. this has been a real key for you as we put together the forecast on this. the spaghetti models are coming together. it looks thick it will be right through this entire area of this cone of uncertainty right near in terms of landfall. still a cat -- category one hurricane. look like tonight into tomorrow in terms of landfall before it becomes a remnant low f you -- if you take a look at how wide this cone is here, that is an indication of just how far the reach will be in term of the

impact of the winds. the wind ill be major factor here because they will be very strong. we are talking wind that could pick up to 60 to 70 plus mile posterior -- mile per hour in term of gusts. with these strong winds, it will continue to push the water up across from the bay as well as the tidal potomac and we could see long periods of repeated and extended coastal flooding as a result of it. there is a chance it could stall out as well before it make landfall before it starts to move on. don't venture out if you don't have to because this is very serious. tuesday, noon, 64-mile per hour wind gusts with the system as we head through into the early hours of tuesday. thins starts to improve a little bit. we get down to wind gusts into the upper 20s and 30s by the time we get into the tuesday

afternoon period. rain totals of 8 to 10 inches. could see isolated amounts of up to 12 inches as well from tease through to the east. to the north, 6 to 8 inches. on the back side of that, we are talking colder arrest wrapping in around it and that is where we're talking winter precipitation over the course of the algapy front, the potomac high lands and for the mountains -- over the course of the allegheny front. it tries to bring it to the east so we'll watch that. let's check in now with julie wright to see how commuter are doing. >> it is not easy out here on the roads this morning. even though we have lighter than usual traffic volume, we are keeping an eye open for those roads that are covered with leaves. the mix of the rain and the leaves causes a very slippery commute out here on the highway. be careful coming in off the georgetown pike. getown pike.

little falls parkway shut down between massachusetts avenue and river road. even the sligo creek parkway blocked off between wayne and piney branch until further notice. an accident reported south on 95. metro service suspended until further notice. metrobus, metro access and montgomery county ride-on buses, service has been suspended. 50 is blocked off between golf course road and philadelphia road. though not a lot of people out and about this morning. thank goodness. that is working in your area. if you are essential personnel and i've heard from doctors and nurses who have to get to work. right now, not too bad. but be prepared for the trip home this evening where you could run into tree debris and

rain. further north in the resort town of ocean city, maryland, the hurricane's heavy winds are creating huge waves. >> this is supposed to be huge. >> reporter: area businesses are boarded up as sandbags line the storefronts. >> just got another load of sandbags to put around the doors to keep the water out. >> parts of new york and new jersey are supposed to bear the brunt of this storm. >> it will have alet of water damage. >> reporter: in the big apple, the new york stock exchange is shutting down as a result of the impending storm. schools, buses, train and sub because are all closed. >> this is nothing to play with and this is nothing to take lightly. so take it seriously. >> reporter: now, what is different about this storm is it is off-season here so it is not nearly as busy as it would be when a typical hurricane passes through. most of the businesses are shuttered. they have their sandbags. schools and city offices are closed here in the virginia
